Canon EOS 550D and EOS 7D ISO Comparison

As you may know, EOS 550D and EOS 7D are positioned differently for level of photographers. Moreover, several people always said that the EOS 550D is a ‘small version of EOS 7D‘. Since both camera use the 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with DIGIC 4 processor that has ISO range of 100-6400 (Expansion to 12800). EOS 7D has dual “DIGIC 4” processors because it has capability to shoot at 8 fps but EOS has only one “DIGIC4” sensor.

Few days ago, I just had a chance to do a small test regarding comparison of ISO between EOS 550D and EOS 7D. Before seeing all tested result, I would like to describe how I tested both cameras.

• All shots from both cameras were handheld.

• All photos were taken with Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens.

• All photos were taken in RAW format (.CR2) and converted into highest JPG quality with Canon Digital Professional Photography (Canon DPP) version 3.8.

• Fluorescent whitebalance is applied to all RAW files prior to converting into JPG files.

• Standard picture style was used.

• Focal length was 15 mm.

• High ISO speed noise reduction was standard.

• High tone priority was disable.

• Auto lighting optimizer was standard.

I capture 100% crop to compare each ISO step as shown below.

ISO 100 (see the image below for comparison) – At ISO 100, I had shutter speed only 1/4 sec so my shots are not sharp enough but they are good for ISO comparison even though the lens has Image Stabilizer to help me.
